On March 16th we made the difficult decision to close our office to the public even though some local health professionals were advising to go about your daily routine. Since then we had to reinvent how we do your taxes. We miss our clients and can't wait to meet again face to face.
If you wish to use our online portal you have to call or email us first. We will then send an invite to your email. You set up your own password and security settings. We will not upload your sensitive documents until you inform us you have set up the portal on your end. This avoids the potential danger of an incorrect email address. Mistakes can happen, but a wrong email address or even a hacked email account will not expose you to identity fraud.
For the first time ever the Canada Revenue Agency is accepting digital signatures on your tax documents for personal and corporate returns. Our portal meets the strict requirements set out by the CRA as only the taxpayer and the tax preparer have access to the documents. Email is not secure enough to pass this test.
Using a digital signature in this context is easy as can be. Once you open your document you will be directed to the signature locations via links and will be able to sign write on your computer, tablet or smart phone. It's almost as easy as pen and paper.
We understand that many of our clients are either unable to access the portal or would rather use the tried and true method. Still others have too much paperwork or lack a scanner to send things online. For you we have our secure drop box located at our office door. We clear it out every day and then let the papers sit for a day before we work on them. When we call you to review your tax returns you can still opt to use our portal to receive and sign your tax documents or we can mail them to you and you can mail or drop off the signed forms we require before we can send your return to the CRA.
